Indications for ectoprosthetics

  • Extensive injury of the bone walls of the orbit and major orbital soft tissue destruction with which surgical reconstruction is almost impossible;

  • Complete obliteration of the conjunctival cavity after severe thermal and chemical burns or extensive mechanical injuries, with patients recovering after a series of plastic surgeries without improvement;

  • Status post orbital exenteration and other operations undertaken to remove malignant tumours of the orbit, resulting in the surgical removal of the eyeball, the eyelids, and the major part of orbital tissue;

  • Severe postradiation atrophy of orbital tissue;

  • A period between reconstructive operations, when using an ocular prosthesis is not possible yet;

  • After surgical removal of the eyeball together with both eyelids or the eyeball with partial evacuation of the orbit content, when a marked scar of the eyelids and mucous membrane develop due to radiating the scar, and as a result of which a regular prosthesis does not last in its place, since no socket has remained in the eyelid arches;

  • After traumatic damage to the eyeball and eyelids and when inserting the cosmetic ocular prosthesis is impossible due to a missing socket.

An ectoprosthesis is a molded artistic imitation of the missing part of the face, which repeats the shape of the orbital region and covers the defect.

Orbital ectoprostheses are made according to individual impressions out of high-quality pigmented silicone that has the same density as human skin. The special prosthetic material is adjusted to the facial bone contours and the skin tone. Artificial eyelids with lashes and a suitable reproduction of the eyeball are made in the middle of the ectoprosthesis.
